Blog Post: Plastic Packaging Tax

Plastic Packaging Tax

Tax! It’s the one thing we cannot avoid in life. We have all heard a lot about the Packaging Tax (PPT) which is being introduced by HMRC in April 2022. There is a minefield of confusing information, so we are going to keep this simple and give you the facts as we understand them.

We do not claim to know everything about PPT, but we are working in partnership with WastePack and following guidance from HMRC.

What do we currently know?

  • The Plastic Packaging Tax will be a tax on packaging that contains less than 30% recycled plastic.
  • Packaging manufactured in, or imported into, the UK, will incur the tax at the rate of £200 per metric tonne of plastic packaging.
  • PPT will be in place from 1 April 2022.

How the tax affects you, our customers?

The main aim of the tax is to save the environment by encouraging use of recycled products and reducing waste sent to landfill. We fully support that, which is why we already have a fantastic range of eco-friendly, sustainable packaging products – which can be found here.

As a McKinleys customer you will already be aware that we only supply good, high-quality products and we will continue to source from our high-quality suppliers. All of our products have been tried and tested. We put them through a robust evaluation process, and we choose only the best products.

We offer several products that are plastic free, 100% recyclable and biodegradable. For example, the SpeedMan box which offers a plastic free alternative to void fill, but we will only offer it to you if it is right for your business.

We will continue in our quest to find and add, only the best eco products to our portfolio.

Our Responsibility as your supplier

At McKinleys we aim to make ecommerce goods as sustainable as possible. Sometimes products that are eco-friendly may have a higher carbon footprint. Using products containing recyclable material doesn’t always mean that it is better for the environment or your business.

The McKinleys promise is that we will only offer you products that are the best for your business and give you realistic advice. If our products that contain more than 30% recycled plastic are better for your business, in terms of usage, cost, wastage, efficiencies, landfill, recovery, sustainability, we will offer you that product. We will recommend and provide trials on genuine plastic reducing options, where a customers weight of plastic per pallet can be reduced dramatically (in some cases up to 60%) by using innovative polymer blends which don’t compromise on load stability. Alternative products would not offer the same stretch so you will use more and create wastage which would cost you more and slow down your packaging processes.

We are not packaging tax experts, but we are packaging product experts. Call today to speak to Brent and Kester, our sustainability experts and, as always, we will always be crystal clear about the facts of packaging performance, cost, sustainability and how products match up to alternative reduced plastic and plastic-free products which are not always the answer.

For the latest information we recommend that you regularly check with HMRC and WASTEPACK LTD.
