Case Study: ROYD

We found some great alternatives to plastic that work well for our products and processes, and, most importantly, do not compromise quality.

Ambitious sustainability goals

ROYD is a tool company known for its TRACER, SMART and OPTIMAXX brands. With the aim to eradicate all single-use plastic from its packaging and shipping, they started the Zero100 campaign back in 2021.

Since their products are sold in builders’ merchants, the biggest challenge to this campaign so far has been to keep the packaging attractive to consumers. A solution to this is already being rolled out, but looking at packing of orders the partnership with McKinleys played an important role.

McKinleys are very helpful with anything we ask for, they are always available to help with any request and if they are not able to get the exact product, they have been able to offer alternatives, often for the better.

Finding the right alternatives

After conducting various tests and trials, ROYD has discovered the perfect alternatives that do not compromise the quality of their processes.

When it comes to sending goods to customers, quality cardboard boxes are essential. Working together with McKinleys, ROYD now uses custom-sized boxes that require less void fill, save space, and ensure that the customer receives their goods in perfect condition.

SpeedMan paper rolls

One of the most significant changes that ROYD has made is in the cushioning and void fill material. Previously, they used unreliable plastic air cushioning and bubble wrap. However, they now use 100% recycled SpeedMan paper, which requires less material and provides even better protection for some of their products.

This has been a big one for us, a great plastic-free alternative to bubble wrap

In addition to this, ROYD switched to printed paper tape, which not only has a better appearance but is also more efficient, thanks to the smaller core of E-Tape rolls. Furthermore, with the retractable blade of the tape dispensers, the packaging process is now safer.

Finally, ROYD's sustainability goals were further supported by the implementation of a machine pallet wrapper. This allows them to adjust settings to ensure that they only use what they need while improving pallet stability, reducing waste, and decreasing team fatigue.

A partnership based on innovation and trust

With a partnership spanning over the last two years, ROYD understands the hidden value of a family-run business that is friendly and always ready to go the extra mile, even when next-day urgent deliveries are requested.

Together, ROYD and McKinleys continue to uphold their values, constantly innovating their products and offering the best service to the customers while looking out for the environment by reducing their carbon footprint.

McKinleys are always friendly and readily available, they are always willing to help with any requests that are sent their way.
