THE PROBLEM: Stitching wire is a cost effective, profitable binding solution. Our customer, a large-scale digital printing company, were having problems with stitching wire whist it was unspooling – the wire would curl up and knot causing tangles and jams in the stitching heads. Our customer needed to frequently stop production to refeed the wire. They asked McKinleys to investigate a solution for use with their Horizon and Müller Martini stitching lines.
THE SOLUTION: We successfully helped our customer to increase the output of books, improve safety within the workplace and reduce costs. We provided them with 250kg of loose stitching wire contained in a drum instead of the 90kgs on a spool. The key advantages for our customers were fewer spool changes, reduced wire change-over time, improved stitcher head performance, longer running times. An additional benefit for the company was using a fully recyclable product. The octagonal drum is made from corrugated carboard. As there are no metal or plastic parts, the product simply folds up and can be put into the recycling bin.
